I love your descriptor of finding things that help us, “change the channel.” I agree that different people find different ways to alter their mental status quo, but I would add one thing. Some things we do are objectively bad for our biology, and alcohol is one of them. It is a carcinogen with no health benefits, despite decades of gaslighting otherwise. That is a driving factor in my decision making. If my body is working hard to reject an input, why would I consume it, even in moderate quantities. One could argue that base jumping is all up side with no biological negatives. The same could not be said of drugs like alcohol.
